Literature review -- the sons of God and the Nephilim

Source audit for The Sons of God and the Nephilim.  Every item below is marked CITED, CONSIDERED -- NOT USED (with the reason), or WANTED (not obtained).  Library keys refer to rows in sources/index.tsv or to the shard sources/index.d/genesis-sons-of-god-and-the-nephilim-20260905.tsv.

Standing rule that governed this research:  no quotation, page number, date or numeral in the article was established through Claude's WebFetch.  Everything was fetched with curl and read locally, read from files already in the library, or read paragraph by paragraph through bin/iapdsearch.py on print-disabled archive.org items (Heiser 2015, Morris 1976, Vermes 1998), for which nothing was stored and the leaf-to-page offset was anchored twice against each book's own index or contents list.  WebSearch was used to locate Kline 1962, Annus 2010, Hodge 2008, and the National Geographic hoax article.

Split candidates

None.  The "and also afterward" subsection could grow into a short article on the Anakim, Rephaim, and Og if the conquest narratives are ever treated on this site.

Verification pass 1 (2026-09-05)

An adversarial verifier re-checked this article against bytes.  Seventy ledger rows are in agents/artifacts/ledgers/genesis-verify-ledger.tsv under the article slug.  Counts:  42 CONFIRMED, 11 MISLOCATED, 8 OVERSTATED, 5 ARGUMENT, 1 MISQUOTED, 1 WRONG-SOURCE, 1 CONTEXT-REVERSED, 1 UNREACHABLE, 1 FALSE-ALARM.

What was checked, and how

Every footnote carrying a page, leaf, section, verse or date was verified, not a sample.  Routes:  the library files on disk (Wenham, Skinner, Westermann, Cassuto PDF, Charles 1902 and 1913, Swete, Luther, Niese, morphhb, MorphGNT, Sefaria JSON, the CMI/AiG/NatGeo/Bredenhof HTML); curl on CCEL, New Advent, earlychristianwritings and creation.com; and bin/iapdsearch.py re-run by the verifier on all three print-disabled archive.org items.  For each of those three the leaf-to-page offset was re-derived independently from BookReaderJSIA.php, which needs no login:  completedeadseas00verm leaf 149 = p. 125, 153 = p. 129, 473 = p. 449;  unseenrealmrecov0000heis leaf 29 = p. 27 through leaf 201 = p. 199 (offset 2);  genesisrecordsc00morr leaf 167 = p. 163 through leaf 318 = p. 314 (offset 4), double-checked against the running head "God and the World He Made 174" on leaf 178.  CCEL page numbers were re-derived by fetching the neighbouring chapters and finding where each Page_nnn anchor actually falls.  research/count-bene-elohim.ts was re-run and reproduces its eight hits exactly;  an independent scan without the morphology filter returns the same eight, so the filter drops nothing.  Every lifespan in the 120-year table was read out of the Westminster Leningrad Codex by hand.  No verdict here passed through WebFetch.

The matching rows in quotes.md were corrected with each fix.

Proposed, not changed — the coordinator decides

Ranked by how much damage each does if left.

  1. The pre-AD-200 claim is contradicted by the article's own evidence. The heading "The angelic reading is the only reading before AD 200" and the sentence "no Jewish or Christian writer whose words survive read the sons of God as men" cannot stand beside Symmachus, Targum Onkelos, Rabbi Shimon ben Yoḥai, and Wenham's own dating of the royal reading to "about the middle of the second century A.D." The qualifier "whose words survive" is applied inconsistently, since Africanus survives only through Syncellus.
  2. The Samaritan Pentateuch was not checked. Charles 1902 p. 33 — the page this article quotes twice — lists the Samaritan version with Onkelos and Symmachus as reading "sons of the mighty." It is the most damaging possible counterexample to the pre-AD-200 claim and the one source the review marked "not needed."
  3. "The earliest readers, who knew the Hebrew far better than any modern." Falsifiable in five minutes: 1 Enoch survives in Aramaic, Greek and Ethiopic and its author was working from a Greek rendering on Westermann's account; Justin, Athenagoras, Irenaeus, Tertullian and Lactantius had no Hebrew.
  4. The lexical argument's sample. The exact form bene (ha)'elohim has three uses outside Genesis 6, and all five non-Genesis tokens including the 'elim variant sit in Job and Psalms. The genre-and-sample-size reply is not answered, and Bates's "five times" is quoted without reconciling it with the article's eight.
  5. Numbers 13:33 is used in both directions. Section 9 makes it the control that fixes nephilim = giant; section 10 concedes nobody knows why the Numbers Nephilim carry the name.
  6. The 120-year verdict overreaches. The lifespans refute the cap reading; they do not establish the countdown reading, and the Hebrew yamav is never argued.
  7. "Nothing on this site depends on which reading is right" is not quite true: flood-narrative Summary point 2 leans on "a boat is built for 120 years."
  8. Westermann is enlisted as going "further" than Cassuto in the section arguing the angelic reading, when the paragraph quoted opens by calling that identification "the beginning of a confusion."
  9. Heiser's naphiyla etymology is repeated as the article's own verdict ("the only etymology that explains both spellings") with no Semitist cited agreeing.
  10. "Both men had 'angels' in front of them" is false for Origen, whose Contra Celsum 5.55 quotes "the sons of God."
  11. "A human skeleton some ten metres long" — the National Geographic article gives no measurement at all.
  12. The frontmatter description says the exact phrase names heavenly beings "in all five of its other uses," which is only true if the bene 'elim variant counts as the exact phrase. The body states this correctly.

From Eric's research notes, neither used nor recorded here

  • christianity/undesigned coincidences.md: Joshua 11:21-22 leaves Anakim only in Gaza, Gath and Ashdod, and 1 Samuel 17:4 puts Goliath in Gath. That is a textual answer to the "and also afterward" problem this article says the text does not answer.
  • yec/dinosaurs in history.txt: Pseudo-Clement, Recognitions 1.29 on the giants "whose bones of enormous size are still shown in certain places" — a patristic witness missing from the table, and Charles's list on p. 33 already names "Ps. Clement, Hom. viii. 13." The same file collects Pausanias I.35.5-6, Pliny NH 7.73-75 (the 46-cubit Cretan skeleton) and Plutarch Sertorius 9, which would strengthen the Augustine point in the hoax section.
  • christianity/texts/canon.txt: Eric's own scepticism that 1 Enoch "exists only in Aramaic and Greek, not some older language," which bears on this article's date for the Book of the Watchers — already marked WANTED above because Milik was not consulted.

Could not be reached

  • Kline's issue number and month. The pages 187-204 are confirmed from the PDF's running heads, and meredithkline.com's own list gives "WTJ 24 (1961/62): 187-204," which confirms that Wenham's "[1963]" is wrong. The "24(2) (May 1962)" in the footnote could not be verified: the PDF carries no issue line, and pdcnet, philpapers, the WTJ archive pages and an Open Library search-inside query all returned nothing. Either verify it against a printed cover or drop back to "WTJ 24 (1961/62)."

Note for another article's owner

genesis-longevity cites Cassuto p. 259 in [^cassuto-1961:patriarchs] for "Sarah: at Isaac's birth her age was 90 … Joseph: he was sold at the age of 17."  That block is on printed p. 260 (PDF 281).  It is the same one-page-early drift found six times here, and the cause is the same:  Cassuto prints the page number at the foot of the page.
