Every source the article rests on is listed here. The larger catalogue for the whole series is on the parent page, the origin of life: the literature.
Direction. supports strengthens the case that the origin of life is unsolved; undercuts weakens it; complicates cuts both ways. Assigned by what the source shows, not by what its author believes.

Considered and not used
- Decker, Schweer & Pohlmann 1982, J. Chromatogr. A 244:281. The universal citation for "the formose reaction makes more than forty sugars." Paywalled, not opened, no abstract obtained. This article therefore states no count.
- Butlerow 1861. Named for the reaction's date only; the paper was not opened and nothing depends on its wording.
- Szostak 2009, Nature 459:171. The News and Views on Powner 2009. Paywalled; its famous sentence is relayed only through Wade and is not printed in the article.
- Neveu, Kim & Benner 2013, Astrobiology 13:391. Where the asphalt paradox originates. Not opened; Benner's own 2014 restatement is used instead.
- Mizuno & Weiss 1974; Zubay 1998; Zubay & Mui 2001; Mueller et al. 1990; Sanchez & Orgel 1970; Krishnamurthy, Guntha & Eschenmoser 2000. All appear only as another author's summary, and are labelled as such wherever mentioned. Zubay's 30% aldopentose figure is Orgel's characterisation and the article does not print it as a measurement.
- Becker et al. 2016, Science 352:833. The purine route Tour reviews. Not obtained in usable form. The article cites Carell's later 2019 route and says plainly that Tour's yield figures are his characterisation of the 2016 paper rather than checked against it.
- Kan et al. 2026, JACS Au 6:922. Molecular dynamics settling the formose autocatalysis debate. Abstract only, not needed.
- Diukarev et al. 2025; Yang et al. 2026; Scherf et al. 2026; the Bennu nucleobase paper of 2026. Surfaced in the live search, abstract only or not opened. Several belong with the Miller-Urey and homochirality articles instead.
- Furukawa et al. 2025 on Bennu sugars. Reaches this article only through Leyva's Table 1, and is not cited on its own.
Open questions
- The main text of Powner 2009 has never been obtained here. Every experimental figure comes from the supplementary information, which is the more detailed document, but the main text's own yield summary has not been checked. This is the largest gap.
- Decker 1982 should be opened if the article ever wants to print a number for how many sugars the formose reaction makes.
- The Ricardo 2004 supporting material carries the actual stability curves and was not obtained.
- Nobody appears to have surveyed how much of the carbon in prebiotic reaction mixtures ends up as tar. Benner's "exactly zero confirmed observations" is checkable in principle and has not been checked systematically. That would be an original contribution.
- Whether any published route reaches all four canonical ribonucleotides from one-carbon feedstocks in one environment. Searched and none found. A counterexample would require rewriting the audit table.
