Source audit for Genesis and Ancient Near Eastern Parallels. Every item is marked CITED, CONSIDERED -- NOT USED (with the reason), or WANTED (not obtained). Library keys refer to rows in sources/index.tsv or the shard sources/index.d/genesis-genesis-and-ane-parallels-20260904.tsv.
Standing rule: no quotation, page number, date or numeral in the article was established through WebFetch. Everything was downloaded and read locally, or read paragraph by paragraph from print-disabled archive.org items through bin/iapdsearch.py, with the leaf-to-page offset anchored as recorded below. Every quotation and its route is in quotes.md.
1. The primary texts
| Source | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Gilgamesh XI, eBL edition (George's text and translation) | CITED -- load-bearing | ebl-2022, already in the library. Every line in the flood table was read from lines-reconstruction-translation.tsv. Line numbers are George's. |
| Lambert and Millard, Atra-hasis (1969), with Civil's Sumerian Flood Story | CITED -- load-bearing | lambert-1969, library PDF and OCR with running-head page numbers. Used for the Ku-Aya colophons (pp. 31-32), the plot summary (pp. 9-11), the Ugarit and Nippur MB pieces (p. 6), III v 34-35 (p. 99), and Civil on CBS 10673 (p. 138). |
| ETCSL, The Flood story t.1.7.4 | CITED | New this session, etcsl-2006c. Downloaded and tag-stripped. Segments A-E quoted. |
| ETCSL, Enki and Ninhursaga t.1.1.1 | CITED | New, etcsl-2006b. Lines 11-26 (Dilmun), 264-271 (Ninti). |
| ETCSL, Sumerian King List t.2.1.1 | CITED -- in the table only | Already in the library. "In 5 cities 8 kings" and "Then the flood swept over." Numerics are in genesis-longevity. |
| Lambert, Babylonian Creation Myths (2013) | CITED -- verification copy only, not stored | Not in the library and not lendable. Read from the OCR text of a third-party upload on archive.org (babylonian-creation-myths) for verification of p. 9 (date range and "c. 1100"), p. 3 (Nineveh manuscripts), p. 248 (Marduk's elevation), and the translation of I 1-5 (p. 51) and IV 137-140 (p. 95). The file was deleted after use. Page numbers should be re-checked against a library or print copy before publication; the item is listed as WANTED for that purpose. |
| Heidel, The Babylonian Genesis (1951) | CITED -- load-bearing | New, heidel-1951. The Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures' free PDF (identical bytes to the archive.org copy). Running heads give every page. Chapter III read in full. |
| Pritchard, ANET 3rd ed. (1969) | CITED | Already in the library as an OCR re-typesetting without most page numbers. Used for Wilson's Memphite Theology introduction (p. 4; a "4 EGYPTIAN" head survives), Speiser's Creation Epic introduction (p. 60), Speiser's Adapa (pp. 101-103; a "102 AKKADIAN" head survives). Pages otherwise taken from the standard pagination. |
| Finkel, The Ark Before Noah (2014) | CITED | Library excerpts finkel-2014-ark-before-noah-excerpts (page images PT108, PT303) plus paragraph reads from print-disabled arkbeforenoahdec0000fink (leaves 118, 121, 340, 342). The archive.org leaf numbers are given because the OCR does not surface the printed folios. |
| Lichtheim, Ancient Egyptian Literature I (1973) and III (1980) | CITED | Read through print-disabled ancientegyptianl0001lich (vol. I leaf 77 = p. 51, anchored by the folio in the OCR) and ancientegyptianl0003lich (vol. III leaf 23 = p. 5, anchored by the index entry "Shabaka, 5"). Not stored. |
| Junge, "Zur Fehldatierung des sog. Denkmals memphitischer Theologie," MDAIK 29 (1973) | CONSIDERED -- NOT USED directly | Not read; cited only as Lichtheim 1980 reports it, and the footnote says so. |
| Berossus (Verbrugghe and Wickersham) | CONSIDERED -- NOT USED | Mentioned only through Lambert 1965 (birds, ten kings) and Hasel 1978. A direct fragment edition was not consulted; nothing in the article rests on Berossus alone. |
2. The comparative literature
| Source | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Delitzsch, Babel and Bible (Open Court, 1903) | CITED -- load-bearing for the history | New, delitzsch-1903, public domain, archive.org babelbible1903deli OCR with running heads. Pp. 39-42 read in full. The German Babel und Bibel (1902) was not consulted; the lecture date is not given in the English edition and the article does not give one. |
| Lambert, "A New Look at the Babylonian Background of Genesis," JTS 16 (1965) | CITED -- load-bearing | Read in the Hess-Tsumura 1994 reprint (pp. 96-113) through print-disabled istudiedinscript0004unse; the reprint prints the JTS page numbers in brackets, and every citation uses those. Reprint page = leaf minus 20 (leaf 117 = 97, leaf 133 = 113). One clause on p. 292 has doubtful OCR and is in quarantine.md. Not stored, per the library rule for print-disabled items. |
| Jacobsen, "The Eridu Genesis," JBL 100 (1981) | CITED | Same reprint volume, pp. 129-142, leaves 149-162, JBL pages in brackets. Not stored. |
| Wenham, "The Coherence of the Flood Narrative," VT 28 (1978) | CITED | Same reprint volume, pp. 436-447, leaves 456-467. The seventeen-item table (pp. 346-347) was read directly from leaf 466. flood-narrative cites the same article at greater length. |
| Millard, "A New Babylonian 'Genesis' Story," Tyndale Bulletin 18 (1967) | CITED | Already in the library, journal PDF with page numbers. |
| Hasel, "The Polemic Nature of the Genesis Cosmology," EQ 46 (1974) | CITED -- load-bearing for the conservative reading | New, hasel-1974. Free PDF from biblicalstudies.org.uk; its cover sheet says "45.2," but 1974 is volume 46 of EQ; the running heads carry the pages. |
| Hasel, "The Genealogies of Gen 5 and 11 and Their Alleged Babylonian Background," AUSS 16 (1978) | CITED | Already in the library with [[p.N]] markers. Used for the eight-not-ten kings, p. 367. |
| Speiser, Genesis (Anchor Bible, 1964) | CITED | Print-disabled genesis00spei; page = leaf minus 80, anchored at three leaves (107, 134, 135) by folios in the OCR. Pp. 9-11, 27, 52, 55. Not stored. |
| Kitchen, On the Reliability of the Old Testament (2003) | CITED | Already in the library as OCR text of pp. 422-426 with page breaks. |
| Wenham, Genesis 1-15 (WBC, 1987) | CITED | Already in the library; running heads carry the original pages. Pp. xxxix, xlvii-xlviii, 165-166, 172-173. |
| George, The Babylonian Gilgamesh Epic (2003) | CITED -- load-bearing | Already in the library, PDF and OCR with running heads. Pp. 17-18, 25-26, 70, 339-340, 512, 516-517. |
| Chen, The Primeval Flood Catastrophe (2013) | CITED -- load-bearing for the shared-memory section | Already in the library, PDF and text with running heads. Pp. 7-9, 254. |
| Tigay, The Evolution of the Gilgamesh Epic (1982) | CONSIDERED -- NOT USED directly | In the library, but its OCR carries no reliable page markers. Its finding that Tablet XI's flood came from Atrahasis is cited at first hand in flood-narrative; here the same point is made from the tablet itself (XI 49, 197) and from George p. 25. |
| Kramer, "Reflections on the Mesopotamian Flood," Expedition 9 (1967) | CITED -- in one objection | Already in the library. Ur "far too early"; Kish above Jemdet Nasr. |
| Heidel, The Gilgamesh Epic and Old Testament Parallels (1949) | CONSIDERED -- NOT USED | Heidel's bird-order argument is taken from George's summary and rejection of it (pp. 516-517), which quotes Heidel's words. The 1949 book was not opened; a direct reading would strengthen objection 2. |
| Freedman, "The Dispatch of the Reconnaissance Birds in Gilgamesh XI," JANES 5 (1973) | CONSIDERED -- NOT USED directly | Known only through George's reply. WANTED if the bird argument is ever expanded. |
| Gunkel, Schöpfung und Chaos (1895) | CONSIDERED -- NOT USED | Cited through Lambert 1965 and Hasel 1974. The chaos-battle argument is answered by Lambert's Ugarit point, not re-argued. |
| Sparks, Ancient Texts for the Study of the Hebrew Bible (2005); Walton, Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament (2006); Hallo and Younger, Context of Scripture | CONSIDERED -- NOT USED | Secondary surveys; the article cites the critical editions and the original comparative papers instead. |
| Sarfati, The Genesis Account (2015); AiG and CMI web articles on Gilgamesh | CONSIDERED -- NOT USED | Their arguments (better boat, shorter text, polemic) are all in Kitchen, Millard and Hasel, which are cited at their source. |
3. Sibling articles relied on
| Article | What was taken |
|---|---|
flood-narrative |
The J/P source division and Wenham's palistrophe; the Woolley layer; the local-flood question. Its footnote on Wenham 1978 was used to find the reprint leaves, then verified independently. |
ark-logistics |
The cube-versus-hull rule ("better engineering, not earlier") and the NOVA coracle; the Finkel PT303 excerpt. |
flood-legends |
The census of flood traditions and the candidate real floods. |
genesis-longevity |
The King List numerics. Not repeated. |
4. Wanted
- Lambert 2013 in a licensed copy, to confirm pp. 3, 9, 51, 95, 248.
- Freedman 1973 JANES, for the bird argument at first hand.
- Heidel 1949 The Gilgamesh Epic and Old Testament Parallels, for his bird-order argument at first hand.
- The bilingual antediluvian fragment from Ashurbanipal's library (Lambert's "nine kings"), in a modern edition.
- Any published Middle Babylonian Atrahasis piece from Ugarit (RS 22.421) in translation, since it is the only second-millennium flood text found west of the Euphrates.
5. Split candidates
None. The bird-episode section could carry a short child article if Freedman 1973 and Heidel 1949 are obtained.
Verification pass 1 (2026-09-05)
An independent verifier re-read the article against the bytes, checking every footnote that carries a page, leaf, line or date. 66 items are in agents/artifacts/ledgers/genesis-verify-ledger.tsv: 48 CONFIRMED, 6 MISLOCATED, 1 MISQUOTED, 1 CONTEXT-REVERSED, 2 OVERSTATED, 7 ARGUMENT, 1 UNREACHABLE. Nothing was taken on the writer's word; every print-disabled item was re-read through bin/iapdsearch.py and every library file re-read from disk. bin/quotecheck.py verified nothing (47 of 47 quotations are library-sourced with no URL to re-fetch), so it was not used as evidence either way.
Fixed in index.md
| What | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Summary item 4, the age of Tablet XI | "no copy of Tablet XI is older than the seventh century BC" | "older than about 750 BC" -- Lambert p. 292 says "no copies earlier than 750 B.C. are known," the mid-eighth century, and the article's own table already said so |
| Summary item 5, the Megiddo facts | cited george:p25 alone for the shepherd, 1954 and Tablet VII |
george:p25 plus george:p339; those three facts are on pp. 339-340, and p. 25 carries only the no-flood statement |
George footnote :p517 |
"Heidel's argument is quoted and called 'methodologically suspect'" on p. 516 | "quoted there and, on p. 517, called 'methodologically suspect'" -- the phrase falls after the running head "SYNOPSIS AND EXEGESIS: TABLET XI 517" |
Lambert 2013 footnote :p248 |
"The chapter concludes for the reign of Nebuchadnezzar I" | now names pp. 277 and 443, where Lambert actually argues that date; p. 248 only poses the question |
| Lambert 1965, the long-lived figures | cited :p297 |
:p292 added; p. 297 carries only the šabbāt/šapattu argument, and the antediluvian-figures discussion is at pp. 292-293 and 298-299 |
Millard footnote :p15 |
"Millard, p. 15" | "pp. 14-15"; the sentence begins "There can be no doubt that the con-" at the foot of p. 14. Mirrored in quotes.md |
Millard footnote :p18 |
"P. 18: 'The two accounts undoubtedly describe the same Flood, the two schemes relate the same sequence of events'" | "Pp. 17-18"; the line breaks after "the two schemes." Mirrored in quotes.md |
Proposed, not changed (the coordinator adjudicates)
- The verdict is narrower than the Summary and title imply. The article argues that shared narrative devices are "choices a storyteller makes," then concludes that both traditions descend from something that "included a boat, a mountain, a window, birds, and a sacrifice" -- that is, a shared story. On its own reasoning the common source is literary, which concedes dependence on a shared literary tradition and denies only dependence on a surviving tablet. Say that plainly.
- The evidentiary bar in "What would show it" is applied asymmetrically. Literary dependence is normally established by cumulative distinctive agreement in sequence, which the article concedes in Wenham's seventeen ordered points. Either answer why the ordinary standard does not apply, or concede that on that standard dependence on a tradition is demonstrated.
- "The flood is a latecomer to Gilgamesh" bears on which text, not which direction. Atrahasis carries the full flood at about 1635 BC by the article's own colophon evidence. Summary items 4-5 give the point more prominence than it can carry.
- Lambert on the "ten long-lived patriarchs" is misused. At JTS pp. 292-293 that phrase denotes the Genesis patriarchs, and in the same paragraph Lambert writes that the Sumerian tablets attest the kings "either eight or ten in number" and that the bilingual fragment has nine. The article's contrast makes Lambert the target of a correction he had already made. Recast as Hasel pressing a point Lambert conceded, or drop the Lambert clause.
- "Younger than the Hebrew monarchy" (Summary item 4 and the Verdict) is loose: a copy of about 750 BC is contemporaneous with the divided monarchy. Lambert's own formulation is "later than the Biblical account."
- The absence of birds in Atrahasis is an argument from silence over a damaged column. The body says so once; Summary item 4 and Objection 1 state it flatly. Carry the caveat up.
- George's consensus is quoted but never engaged. "Few doubt that Noah's story is descended from a Mesopotamian account" appears as an epigraph; the replies are that no mechanism has been proved and that the arguments are circular, which argues from absence of proof to parity.
- The kupru/kofer link is used in both directions -- "a cognate is not a loan" and "the kind of evidence a textual channel would leave." Wenham p. 173 and Speiser p. 52, the two sources cited, both treat it as a cognate.
- Hasel's credential. The 1974 paper's own byline reads "Associate Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Theology in Andrews University"; the footnote says "professor," which he became later.
- Sibling wording.
flood-narrativefootnote:p346describes the seventeen-item table as "pp. 345-347." The reprint's[346]bracket falls before the table, so the table proper is VT pp. 346-347, as this article says.

- ANET p. 60. Speiser's Creation Epic introduction is verbatim in the library copy (OCR 11924-11930) and in the PDF, but that copy is an OCR re-typesetting with no folio near the passage and no page breaks, and the PDF pages carry no readable running head there. Two routes tried. The page rests on the standard ANET pagination, not on a folio read in this copy.
- Lambert 1965 p. 292, "most probable / most improbable." Re-run independently through
iapdsearch; the OCR reads "most probable" again. The quarantine stands and still wants a page image of JTS 16 or of the reprint. - Lambert 2013 in a licensed copy, Freedman 1973, Heidel 1949 and the Ugarit Atrahasis piece remain WANTED as recorded above. Lambert 2013 pp. 3, 9, 51, 95 and 248 were all re-confirmed against the community OCR's running heads, so the flag is now about provenance, not about the page numbers.

delitzsch-1903_babel-and-bible.mduses doubled spaces between words. A plaingrepfor any quoted phrase returns nothing; pipe throughtr -s ' 'first. All three Delitzsch pages (39, 40, 41) verify once that is done.- Two OCR files break quoted phrases across a hyphenated line end, so a phrase search reports a false absence: Speiser p. 10 "Babylonian proto-\ntypes" and Wenham p. 173 "a remarkable parallel with the\nbiblical tradition." Both quotations are genuine and verbatim.
- The Hess-Tsumura reprint's bracketed original-journal page numbers fall mid-paragraph, so the reprint page is not a safe proxy. Verified brackets:
